The final regular season edition of the NCISAA Official Girls Basketball Top Five reveals that the frontrunners remain the as we look ahead to the playoffs. Providence Day (3A0, Carolina Day (2A) and Neuse Christian (1A) are again queens of the hill. With the seeding committees meeting this week these three should receive the top seeds going into the state tournament barring a major miracle.

Probably the biggest news in the NCISAA girls ranks in the past two weeks was Carolina Day’s 61 -52 win over Providence. The game featured the top ranked 2A and 3A schools in the NCISAA as well as a head to head matchup between coaches Josh Springer and Joe Carrington. The two combined have won 13 straight state champions with Springer grabbing seven and Carrington with six and placing both in the category of the John Wooden of NCISAA girls basketball.

In the contest Carolina Day took the lead for good in the second quarter and never with their advantage reaching as much as 14 points in the second half. Fordham bound point guard Ralene Kwiatkowski and Haleigh Gillis led the Wildcats with 24 and 14 points respectively while Kasy Kidwell tossed in 16. Providence Day’s Janelle Bailey and Kennedy Boyd both had 18.

Neuse Christian remains the only undefeated girls team in the NCISAA as they completed the regular season with a 20-0 mark. The Lions are averaging 66.7 points per contest while allowing only 32.8 a difference of almost 34 ppg.The Brazilian connection of Lzabela Leite (5’9 Jr F) 18.2 ppg, Brigham Young bound Maria Albiero (5’7 G Sr) 14.4 ppg and Isabella DeAngelo (6’4 soph C) 9.2 ppg have paced the scoring.

Neuse Christian survived a huge scare back on January 30 escaping with a 81-68n double overtime win over second ranked Northwood Temple. Leite’s 24 and Albiero’s20 paced NCA while Northwood’s cousin combo of Kendal and Ciara Moore combined for 25 points.

Fayetteville neighbors Northwood Temple and Trinity Christian remain second and third in this week’s poll. Northwood Temple won both regular season meeting between the two schools and as things stand today would possibly receive the number two seed.

Despite the loss to Carolina Day, their only setback to an NCISAA school this year, Providence Day is still the team to beat in the 3A ranks. The Lady Chargers have not lost to a 3A school this season. All of their wins over 3A schools have been by at least 15 points this season save a 43-37 win over Greensboro Day back on November 29. Senior McDonalds All American andUNC Chapel Hill signee Janelle Bailey has been the stalwart averaging 23.3 ppg and 12.5 rebounds per contest. Point guard Kennedy Boyd also averages in double figures at 11.7ppg along with almost four assists and three steals.

Coach Matthew McCarthy has done an admirable job in resurrecting the secondranked Wesleyan Christian program as they reached the 20 win plateau Friday night with a win over Greensboro Day. Junior point guard Shaniya Jones has been the Trojans leader on both ends of the court. Jones just recently verbaled her intentions to Virginia Tech.

Third ranked Hickory Grove also reached the twenty win mark last week with a win over Metrolina. Senior forward Haley Bearden was recently honored for setting the career three point field goal record for the Lions
