The annual Greenfield Christmas Tournament got underway lTuesday with four games played at the Wilson NC campus. The tournament, played annually the week before Christmas features some of the top squads in the NCISAA.
Under the direction of Greenfield AD and basketball coach Rob Salter and facilities manager Daniel Johnson the first day’s action went smooth as silk with competitive games and excellent sportsmanship. Only two technical foul was whistled in the four contest , one for a wrong number in the scorebook and one for an inbounds violation.
Add to the fact that there was a spacious hospitality room featuring a spread by Parkers Barbecue and an enjoyable time was had by all.
Below is a synopsis of Day I action.
Fayetteville Academy 66 Victory Christian 39
In the tournament opener both teams got off to a slow start as evidenced by a 4-4 tie midway through the opening period. Fayettevile Academy then went on a 9-2 run , keyed by three William Onyeodi baskets, to take a 13-6 1st quarter lead. The Eagles increased their margin to 11 at 17-6 on a Demetrius Jones driving layup and were never seriously challenged the remainder of the way.
Victory’s Jalen Gool canned a three pointer to trim the FA advantage to 226-20 with two minutes left in the half but that would be as close as the Kings would come the remainder of the game,
A thunderous dunk by Odeyodi followed by a jam by Jonathan Gauer pushed the Eagle lead 53-41 early in the final period and Fayetteville Acaademy coasted the rest of the contest.
Sophomore Jon Michael Wright led the FA scoring with 19 and William Odeyodi recorded a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.Jonathan Gauer and Demetrius Jones chipped in with 13 and 10 respectively. Zachary Mack came off the bench to lead VCC with 10.

Wayne Country Day 72 Lake County Christian 64
Wayne Country Day jumped to a big lead and then had to hold off a scrappy Lake County Christian team in their first round game. Lake County was making their first ever appearance in the tournament but their head coach was no stranger to both the tournament as well as the NCISAA. Brian Phillips headed programs at both Village Christian and Freedom Christian before taking over the reins at the Dallas Fort Worth school.
The Chargers dimintutive point guard Jimmie Sanders scored the first seven points of the game nadhad ten in the first period as WCD leapt to an18-13 advantage. In the second stanza WCD standout Jamal King picked up his third foul at the 5:12 mark and was forced to sit the remainder of the half. However Marcus Metcalf picked up King’s slack canning 10 points in the quarter including a trio of threes as the Chargers took a 32-20 lead into the locker room.
Going into the second half with a seemingly comfortable 12 point lead Wayne Country found that the men from Texas were far from dead. The Eagles went on a 16-2 run and back to back three pointers by Jake Palfy and Air Force Academy signee Jake Phillips gave LCC their first lead of the night at 39-36.
The Chargers though fought back and with the score knotted at 45 all used a Jimmie Sanders basket and two Jamal King field goals, one a monster dunk, to take a 51-45 lead which they would not relinquish. However Wayne Country Day could never completely put away the visitor from Teaxas in their 72-64 victory.
Marcus Metcalf paced the WCD attack with 23 points including five three pointers. Jamal King tallied 21 and Jimmie Sanders 17 for the winners. Three Jakes led the LCC scoring with Jake Mattheus leading with 17. Jake Phillips chipped in with 14 and Jake Palfy 11. Trevor Thompson also had 11 for the Eagles.

Greenfield 84 Grace Christian 72
In front of a full house including NC State coach Mark Gottfried, Greenfield raced to a 84 -74 win over a pesky Grace Christian of Raleigh squad in the nightcap. Greenfield, while showing the rustiness of the exam break, still mustered enough offense to keep the visiting Eagles at bay even though their patented defense showed lapses at times.
The Knights Octavious Lacey was on fire in the first quarter dropping in 13 points as GFS opened up a 31-20 advantage. Greenfield jumped to an early 9-2 lead and led 31-20 after one period. After Lacey’s first quarter output UNC Chapel Hill comitt Colby White took over the game for the Knights. White had 12 of the Knight’s 16 second quarter points as they spread their lead to 47-32 at halftime break.
The barrage continued in the third period as Elijah McCadden rose to the forefront scoring eight points as GFS continued to build on their lead closing out the stanza with a 69-51 advantage.
Grace came alive in the final quarter scoring the first eight points cutting the Knight lead to 69-59 on a Justin Hegar bucket. Continuing their resurgence Grace, which compiled a 16-4 final period run got to within six at 73-67 on a Nolan Lory follow shot with 4:11 to play.
But the visiting Eagles were unable to get any closer as White had several coast to coast layups toice the win.
Greenfield had a trio of double scorers led by Colby White’s 32. Elijah McCadden had 21 and Octavious Lacey 15. The win offset an admirable effort by Grace Christian guard Drew Harbour who tossed in 31. Messiah Pankey and Justin Hegar both added 16 to the Eagles effort.
