Murphy edges Plymouth 35-34
WINSTON-SALEM - Murphy's defense came up with the biggest play of the game when they stopped Plymouth running back Demetrius Davis on a 2-point conversion run to preserve a 35-34 Bulldog win.
Plymouth drove from their own 21 yard line with less than 5 minutes to go in the game to close to 35-34 on quarterback Malik Webb's touchdown pass to Demarkus Price with 0:36 seconds left in the game.
The game featured both squads matching each other scores all game.
In the first quarter, Plymouth took a 6-0 lead behind a 19-yard run by Price. The conversion pass was no good. Murphy countered behind the running of Kenton Braswell and Gaige Cox to take a 7-6 lead with 5:59 left in the quarter. Braswell scored from 4-yard out and Foster Stroup's extra point wast good.
Murphy added to their lead in the second quarter when Cox scored from the 2-yard line. Murphy led 14-6 with 7:48 left in the quarter. Plymouth countered with Price's second touchdown on the day. Chad Dance was stopped on the 2-point run. Murphy kept a 14-12 lead.
With 0:24 seconds until half, Murphy tacked on an insurance score on Deion Johnson's 14-yard to take a 21-12 lead at the break.
In the second half, more of the same continue as both teams traded scores. In the third uarter, Plymouth struck first as Demetrius Davis scored from the 1. The 2-point conversion was no good, so Murphy led 21-20 with 6:26 left in the third.
Murphy countered when Dalton Kent hit Bradley Puccio with a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 28-20 lead with 1:31 left in the quarter.
The final quarter featured Plymouth rallying for to tie the game at 28-28. Webb scored on a 1-yard run with 10:34 on the clock. Murphy then answered on Braswell's 13 yard run to give the Bulldogs a 35-28 lead with 4:56 left in the game setting up the final comeback try for Plymouth.
Kenton Braswell won the MVP honors by rushing for 150 yards on 25 carries. Johnson (Most Outstanding Offensive Player) added 10 carries for 112 yards. Austin Satterfield (Most Outstanding Defensive Player) had 14 tackles for the Bulldogs.
For Plymouth, Demetrius Davis (Most Outstanding Offensive Player) lead the Vikings with 19 carries for 71 yards. Davonta Spruill (Most Outstanding Defensive Player) had 16 tackles on defense.
Murphy finishes the season at 13-3 while Plymouth finishes 15-1.
