August 24, 2013LAWNDALE - Opening night of the 2013 season was a tale of two halves at Ron Greene Stadium that saw the Burns Bulldogs (1-0) defeat the Ashbrook Green Wave (0-1) 29-24 Friday night.
Coach Matt Beam's Bulldogs jumped out to a 22-6 halftime lead, and held on in the closing seconds to defeat Ashbrook.
Senior Bulldog WR/DB Jalen King got Burns going early with an INT of Ashbrook QB Austin Mitchell on the Green Wave's opening drive of the game. The turnover set up Burns at midfield and QB Chris Montgomery capped off the drive with a 12 yard air connection to King, with a successful 2-point attempt, it was 8-0 Burns halfway through the first quarter.
Ashbrook came right back on their ensuing drive, taking just over two minutes to cut the Burns lead to 8-6 when Z'Andre Givens crossed the goal line from a yard out.
Burns RB/KR Tylan Ruff returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards down to the 10 yard line to set the Bulldogs up to take a 15-6 advantage when Ruff caught a 12 yard pass from Montgomery. Montgomery increase the Bulldog lead to 22-6 with 9:39 to play in the second quarter with a short two yard QB keeper.
Burns lead Ashbrook in total yardage 201-102 at the break.
Ashrbook's strong second half was sparked by a 99 yard touchdown reception by Givens, who caught the 3rd and 15 screen pass from Mitchell 5 yards deep in his own endzone. After Montgomery score on a 12 yard run to push the Bulldog lead to 29-12, Ashbrook began their furious comeback bid.
Isaac Wright returned the following kickoff for a score, after an unsuccessful 2-point attempt, Ashbrook trailed 29-18. Marquez Myers closed the gap to 29-24 with a powerful two yard run with just 3:09 left to play.
Burns had an opportunity to put the game away with around two minutes to play, but failed to convert on a 4th and two from midfield after Ashbrook had already spent all three of their timeouts.
Ashbrook's final drive would see them get inside the 30 yard line after a pass interference call on the Bulldogs secondary, however without available timeouts, the Green Wave weren't able to get a final snap off quick enough before the clock hit 0:00.
Next week Burns will travel to Hunter Huss who fell to Kings Mountain 28-14 in week 1. Ashbrook will host former Big South Conference rival Crest, who fell to South Point 35-16 to begin the season.
